Divorcing Peacefully - Resolve Conflict Family LawyersPeaceful Divorce – surely that’s an oxymoron, right?

Well, not necessarily. Divorce can certainly be a very trying and stressful time, however there are things you can do to make sure the process is as peaceful as possible (even if your ex-partner isn’t being amicable).

Seek support

Now is the time to seek out emotional and professional support. Divorce can be a tiresome activity, friends and family are an obvious choice for emotional support, however if you need an unbiased opinion, it may be a good idea to seek out a professional. At the beginning of the divorce process it is also wise to seek out legal advice to understand your options and how to proceed.

Don’t play the blame game

“You both co-created your ending and the more you can claim responsibility for your participation, rather than seeing yourself as the victim, the better off you’ll be as you move forward in your life.”[1]

Set and maintain boundaries

Establishing clear boundaries for yourself (as well as your ex-partner) can be a beneficial way to reduce stress. Through setting boundaries, you will feel more in control of the process and thus less stressed.

Focus on the big picture

“Nobody wins in divorce, but if you focus on what’s most important, like your kids and your future, instead of fighting over semantics or trying to be right, you’ll improve your chances of getting an agreement you feel comfortable with and having a peaceful divorce at the same time.”[2]

Navigating the uncertainties of divorce can certainly be problematic, however remember, it’s not impossible to have a peaceful divorce.
