What To Do When Your Spouse Wants A Divorce

What To Do When Your Spouse Wants A DivorceBreaking up is never easy. If your spouse has initiated the divorce process, there are some common-sense steps that you should take in order to protect yourself, as well as ensuring that the process is as amicable and peaceful as possible.

  1. Stay calm. It’s best to try and keep your emotions at bay, so you don’t do or say anything that you may later regret or that could jeopardise a fair divorce.
  2. Get educated. Now is the time to understand the process of separation and divorce. Family Dispute Resolution and Mediation can often be a better course to take for some couples rather than going through the courts.
  3. Do not agree to any custody, child or spousal support arrangement or property division with your spouse before consulting an experienced, qualified divorce and family lawyer; even if your relationship with your spouse is civil.
  4. Keep your children to of mind. It’s important to try and keep your children’s routine as uninterrupted as possible as well as ensuring you don’t place them in the cross fire between you and your ex-partner.
  5. Do your homework. Seek referrals for competent legal representation, accountants, financial advisors and counsellors.
  6. Seek emotional support from family and friends.
